Let Us Make Men

Since its inception in 2005, the Board Opportunity Fund has provided scholarships for 156 deserving juniors and seniors who otherwise would not have been able to complete their education at Morehouse.

In the fall of his senior year, one of Morehouse’s brightest stars, Olawabusayo “Topé” Folarin ’04, lacked the $5,000 needed to complete his undergraduate education. A dejected Folarin planned to go home, which would have deferred his long-held dream of becoming a Rhodes scholar.  College administrators, alumni and friends quickly raised enough money to ensure that Folarin remained in school. After graduation, he left for Oxford University in England, representing Morehouse as its third Rhodes scholar.

Folarin’s story provided the inspiration for the Morehouse College Board Opportunity Fund, which was created and spearheaded by trustees in order to retain students like Topé Folarin, promising upperclassmen who need the resources required to make it to graduation.

Tuition for one year at Morehouse costs $18,500, and actual expenses – room and board, student fees, books, etc. – amount to more than $30,000. Each year, more than 150 students just like Folarin are in jeopardy of leaving Morehouse and, thus, failing to fulfill their potential.  The College is committed to ensuring that students make the transition from undergraduate “Men of Morehouse” to alumni status as “Morehouse Men.”

The Board Opportunity Fund offers financial assistance to upperclassmen in good academic standing who have received the maximum support available through federal programs like the Stafford Loan and the Pell Grant.

By contributing to the Board Opportunity Fund, you can help deserving juniors and seniors complete their education at Morehouse, students like Topé Folarin.  It could mean the difference between a dream deferred and promise fulfilled.
