Inspired and Inspiring Instructors

"Morehouse professors were very demanding in the classroom. They pushed us by constantly raising the bar of excellence."
                                                                        - Calvin H. Harris Jr., Class of 1992

Before becoming an assistant professor of physics at Morehouse in 1998, Dr. Willie S. Rockward commuted every weekend for two years from Atlanta, where his family lived, to Florida, where he worked as a civilian scientist for the U.S. Air Force. "Somehow, the Physics chair at that time, Dr. Robert Dixon, received my information and invited me to give a talk at Morehouse," he recalls. "I've been here ever since."

With the help of grants and donations of computers and other equipment, Dr. Rockward created a physics lab at Morehouse that has become a training ground for science students interested in research careers.

Morehouse College has always attracted great educators like Dr. Rockward, and today it continues that tradition of having the brightest minds teach its young scholars.  Faculty members at Morehouse know they are part of something special, and they go far beyond just conveying information – they are dedicated to upholding Morehouse’s historical mission of educating black men.

Funding from public and private sources enables Morehouse to support scholarly research, faculty publication and participation in educational conferences; provide essential tools for 21st-century teaching, high-tech tools like “smart” classrooms and wireless access; and establish prestigious endowed faculty chairs like the Promising Teacher Award, which entices superior junior faculty to the College by providing them with the resources needed to research, write and develop new projects.

If Morehouse College is to retain its place as one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the nation, it must continue to attract and keep outstanding, committed faculty members.  Direct donations to the College make a difference by helping faculty members equip Morehouse students with the knowledge to break new ground.  Morehouse is committed to garnering the resources needed to enable our faculty members to properly instruct the next generation.
